Vegan-friendly city cafe closes as cost of living claims another victim

A vegan and vegetarian-friendly cafe in Smithfield has announced closure after four and a half years in business.

Sharing the sad news on Instagram over St Patrick's Day weekend, the people behind WokeCup Coffee said they would be closing down soon.

WokeCup Coffee owner Marya told Dublin Live the closure is due to the rising cost of living. She said: "I'm closing due to the economic crisis we're all in now. I would love to reopen after taking a break." She also added that if she opens up again, she would be relocating, adding that she would be taking "a well needed break" before starting the new cafe again.

Separately, she told the cafe's fans: "Our last brunch service will be on Sunday, March 26 and we will be here for coffee and goodbyes on Monday 27. Do drop in and say goodbye to us."

The cafe, which opened in September 2018 has been a favourite spot for vegans and vegetarians alike. They all flocked to the comment section to express their disappointment in the closure of the venue, while other hospitality spots also shared their sympathies in the comments, including V-Face, Kale + Coco, and Thru The Green.

Vegan spots have been closing down since last year, including Veginity, Vegan Sandwich Co, and more recently Bear Lemon, which will be closing April 2.
