Vegan family's polite note asking neighbour to shut window when cooking divides opinion

Food lovers have been left divided after a vegan family asked their neighbour to shut their window when cooking meat. The mum wrote a note, stating that they felt "sick and upset" when the smell was coming into their house.

According to the Mirror, the letter read: "Hello neighbour, could you please shut your side window when cooking please. My family are vegan (we eat only plant-based foods) and the smell of the meat you cook makes us feel sick and upset. We would appreciate your understanding. Thanks Sarah, Wayne and kids."

The Australian family had hoped their polite message could have lead to an amicable solution with their fellow residents. But, unfortunately for them, it appears as though their request fell on deaf ears.

The note divided opinion online (HeyPerth/Facebook)

The neighbour elected to share the note online, with it being posted on local Facebook group 'Hey Perth', where it amassed hundreds of comments as viewers debated who was in the wrong. Some believed the request was reasonable, while others though the family had gone too far.

One unimpressed reader wrote: "Now that's some entitlement." A different person thought: "They should move out if they don't like the smell of meat."

Several also suggested the neighbour should go out of their way to annoy the family. One responder wrote: "Open that window right up." "That's crazy !! Want to organise a barbecue? Invite most of Perth? I'll come," asked a second.

But others defended the family's approach. "At least they were polite," read one reply.

Responding to the backlash to the letter, another said: "Why all the nasty comments? I'm a meat eater, but she was polite and respectful in her request and it's not hard to close a window. Why not just be a considerate neighbour and close the window, rather than turning it into a big issue?"
