Vedaant Madhavan doesn't eat like most people, even "eating is an exercise for him": R Madhavan reveals his hyper disciplined lifestyle

'Dhurandhar' actor R Madhavan has revealed the intense discipline behind his son Vedaant's journey as an elite swimmer, according to a report in The Times of India. Speaking about his son's lifestyle, the actor said Vedaant Madhavan doesn't just sit down for dinner and even treats eating like an exercise.

The champion swimmer's meals are carefully planned and consumed with purpose. The focus isn't just on what is being eaten but also on how much, when and why. According to Madhavan, even the way his son chews his food is approached with the discipline of a professional athlete.

'Even Eating Is an Exercise for Him'

Speaking about Vedaant's routine, Madhavan highlighted the extraordinary discipline that has become a way of life for the young swimmer.

“He’s 6’3”, has a swimmer’s body and follows a hyper disciplined lifestyle. Even eating is an exercise for him; he doesn’t just sit down for dinner, he has to focus on chewing and on meal balance, among other things. I wish I had that kind of discipline; I think I’m actually quite lazy—I just get away with it by calling myself a creative,” he said.

A Day That Starts Before Sunrise

The discipline extends far beyond the dinner table. Madhavan revealed that Vedaant follows a demanding schedule that begins before dawn and ends early in the evening.

“As a professional swimmer, Vedaant’s day ends at eight o’clock, and then he’s up again at four in the morning. It’s the most demanding part of the job, not just for him, but also for his parents. [Laughs] That hour is called brahma muhurta, said to be the most spiritually conducive time to wake up,” he said.

The routine reflects the level of commitment required from athletes who compete internationally and aspire to reach the highest levels of their sport.

More Than Just Training

Vedaant has already built an impressive swimming résumé. Representing India, he has won multiple international medals, including five gold medals at the Malaysian Open, a gold and silver at the Danish Open, and podium finishes at other international competitions.

But according to his father, athletic success isn't just about what happens in the pool.

The discipline carries over into daily life, whether it's sleep schedules, recovery, nutrition or meal planning. Every small detail contributes to performance.

R Madhavan's Parenting Philosophy

The actor also spoke about the relationship he shares with his son and how he approaches parenting in a changing world.

“Since Vedaant was five, I’ve spoken to him like I’m speaking to you, and have taken his opinions seriously,” Madhavan said. “All you can do is share your experience and ensure their environment is safe. Most importantly, home must be a space where they can be their authentic selves, free of judgment.”

He believes children today are more aware than ever and that parents should focus on guidance rather than imposing their views.

The Dream Beyond Medals

Madhavan also shared what he hopes his relationship with Vedaant will look like in the years ahead.

“I want to be an integral part in my son’s life, the kind where my future grandkids call me thatha and visit often. I want him to someday ask me, Dad, how did you raise me?” he said.

The actor added, “Of course, I can’t be there for every event, but he knows I’ll always show up when it matters. We don’t talk every day or say ‘I love you’ all the time, but when he needs a solution or to talk through anything, I’m the one he calls.”

A Glimpse Into an Athlete's Mindset

Vedaant Madhavan's story is often told through medals, records and podium finishes. But his father's latest comments reveal the less visible side of that journey.

Behind every race are years of discipline, early mornings, structured routines and mindful eating habits. For Vedaant, dinner isn't simply dinner. It's another part of the training process—and another step toward his larger goal of sporting excellence.
