VE Day: Ayrshire street party marks special 75th anniversary

It was far from the poignant commemoration we would have envisaged – but people all over the UK still found a way to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday.

In particular, residents of Stewarton’s Lochrig Court held a very special street party – while observing all social distancing measures.

Locals took to their front gardens where houses were decorated with union flags and bunting to mark the milestone.

Some residents in the street had even started a band in recent weeks which featured two flutes, two saxophone, a French horn, trumpet, keyboard and piano. They played Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again and other tunes from the Second World War era.

There to capture the celebrations for the Kilmarnock Standard was photographer Steve McKendrick.
