Cordless vacuums have had significant technological upgrades in the eight years I’ve been working at The Standard.
In my tenure, I have put just about every brand on the market through its paces. In the last year alone, I have had the opportunity to try many Samsung’s ‘most powerful in the UK’, Dyson’s wet and dry innovation and Henry’s carpet cleaning cousin George - and my hunt to find our readers hoovering perfection has now brought me to Vax.
The floorcare expert’s latest leading model is the Vax HomePro Detect Pet-Design, a cordless iteration created to prevent the likes of pet hair from tangling up in the brush, because let’s be honest, no one enjoys having to clean the cleaning tool.
It is also fitted with the brand’s new DebrisDetect technology that automatically adjusts suction power to the dirt and floor type in question as well as a whole host of foolproof functions. I put it through its paces - find out what I thought below.

Set-up
Unboxing the Tetris-packed interior is about the extent of the setup required for the Vax HomePro Detect Pet-Design. This includes unsheathing the wealth of attachments from their cardboard confines and, most importantly of all, securing and slotting the battery into the body of the device. The latter helpfully comes fully charged, so you need not waste an instant starting your cleaning chores.
There is also a wall attachment for easy storage, but the device does seem to stand all on its own, which is handy too.

Functionality
Forget all the smart functionality that modern appliances are kitted out with, the Vax vacuum does the hoovering job and does it well, without unnecessary features or faff. You don’t need a manual to get started, it doesn’t report back any stats about the different dust in your home (do we really care?!) or require a mortgage to afford it. You simply turn it on with the power button on the interface, press the boost button to do exactly that or switch to eco mode for longer cleans.
However, some elements of its cleaning powers are worth digging a little deeper into. First and foremost, what the brand refers to as DebrisDetect. Sensors analyse the surface and debris and automatically adjust the suction power accordingly, while also considering battery level, so you’re optimising the chore. There’s also HairWrap Resist, which we alluded to earlier, that prevents long hairs from getting caught. This is made possible through well-placed silicone and bristle strips.
When it’s time to empty the bin, which will likely be fairly regularly considering the 0.7L capacity, it operates in the same way as the Dyson - a press of the button opens the end directly into a larger waste basket, removing the need for any additional bag purchases.
Other functionality to note is the solid 45-minute runtime, and my personal favourite feature, LED lights in the floorhead to spotlight the dirt and help you see under the sofa and low-height furniture. Honourable mention goes to the extended quantity of attachments - including a crevice tool, a stair tool, and a pet hair remover, to name but a few.
However, it is worth noting that it is a noisy vacuum, so you can’t be completing this household chore while the baby is sleeping and, while easily manoeuvrable, it is not the most lightweight vacuum that I’ve used in recent times.

Verdict
Vax HomePro Pet-Design Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Forget all the smart functionality that modern appliances are kitted out with, the Vax vacuum does the hoovering job and does it well, without unnecessary features or faff. It’s simply a very good vacuum at an affordable price tag.
It is powered by the brand’s own DebrisDetect where sensors analyse the surface and debris and automatically adjust the suction power accordingly. There’s also HairWrap Resist that prevents long hair from getting caught. This is made possible through well-placed silicone and bristle strips.
The vacuum comes with an extended quantity of attachments and is fitted with LED lights to illuminate your path as you scoop up the dirst and grime.
Our only gripe? The noise level. This is not a quiet vacuum.
