Vauxhall Motors stay top despite being held by Wythenshawe Town

Vauxhall Motors may have arguably gained a valuable point in a very promising NWCFL campaign with a goalless draw against Wythenshawe Town at The VanEupen Arena.

The hosts were looking to bounce back from a defeat in the FA Vase last weekend. However, they were coming up against a side of great quality as Wythenshawe had won all of their nine games in the NWCFL this campaign.

Town started the game strongly as they smashed the ball against the post, pouncing on a mistake from the Motors keeper James McClenaghan as he spilled Aaron Dywer’s shot into the path of Matty Bryan.

However, there were very few chances created in the first half despite Mick McGraa’s Motormen looking more likely to open the scoring.

There was a great chance for Motors to take the lead towards the end of the half as Marcus James faced an open goal from near the penalty spot, frustratingly his effort was fired just over.

The half-time whistle would ring with the game goalless and fifteen minutes into the second half Bobbie McDonnell replaced Lewis Buckley as the hosts looked to improve their attacking play.

Soon after, Michael Burkey would take the ball round the keeper with fantastic footwork and his eventual effort would be blocked off the line denying the opener.

Two Motors players would be booked within the space of ten minutes, Greg Drummond and Thomas Mitchell on the receiving end.

Connor Harwood thought he had won the game as he slotted the ball past keeper Wynne late on but the referee pulled play back for a free kick and frustrations could’ve risen considerably when the visitors had a great chance to score themselves. The effort was blocked off the line well.

Vauxhall Motors look to get back to winning ways, following a defeat and a draw, next weekend as they travel to Kendal Town.
