Vauxhall Motors knocked out of Macron Cup after penalty shootout heartbreak

Vauxhall Motors were defeated on penalties at home to South Liverpool in the first round of the Macron Cup on Saturday afternoon.

With The Motors being knocked out of the FA Vase they were looking to go on a cup run to add to their very successful start to their NWCFL campaign. However, the visitors proved to be tricky opponents.

There were very few chances created at the start of the game. However, hosts captain Tom Mitchell opened the scoring when he towered above his marker to powerfully place the ball in the net from a corner.

With a few minutes left of the opening half, the visitors equalised through Darryl Mvalo. Motors’ Bobbie McDonnell replaced Michael Burkey just as the second half started, two other changes were made as Sean Moscrop and Jamie Eaton replaced Aaron Dawson and Francois Antoine.

The game could’ve very easily gone either way in its late stages as McDonnell hit the crossbar for Mick McGraa’s men before Ben Dufton-Kelly kept the ball brilliantly off the line.

With the game level as the full-time whistle blew and a winner needing to be found on the day, penalties decided who progressed through to the Second Round.

Simon Thelwell and Dufton-Kelly failed to convert from twelve yards, thus it was Martin Ryman’s side that were victorious.
