Vauxhall led cops on chase - before smashing into 4x4 and flipping onto roof

A car being 'driven erratically' led police on a chase - before smashing into a 4x4 and flipping onto its roof.

The Vauxhall Astra was left a mangled wreck following the crash on Regent Road, Salford, on Sunday (April 26).

Officers on routine patrol in Manchester city centre spotted the car just before 10.30pm.

The driver didn't stop when police requested and led officers on a short chase.

The Vauxhall then smashed into a Toyota Rav 4 at the junction with Oldfield Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old-man, was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Police have launched an investigation. No arrests have been made.

Images taken in the hours after the crash show the silver badly damaged in the middle of the road.

Witnesses said a police helicopter was scrambled in the wake of the incident.

Regent Road was sealed off for several hours on Sunday night.

The incident has been referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, which will make the decision whether to refer the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

PC Philip Shaw, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This collision could have resulted in even more serious consequences. Thankfully, the injured man is in a stable condition and no-one else was injured.

“Our investigation is ongoing and I appeal to anyone with information or dash cam footage from the surrounding area at the time of the collision or in the minutes before to get in touch with us.”
