Vaughan Gething says any 'stay local' restrictions may only last a few weeks

The Welsh Government's health minister has said that any imposition of a five-mile-rule may only last a few weeks.

This Friday the First Minister is expected to announce the end of the "stay home" rules with him suggesting a period of stay local rules could be introduced.

This is despite very low levels of Covid in Wales and hospital admissions as low as they have ever been since the summer.

Vaughan Gething was questioned about potential plans to introduce stay local rules at the Welsh Government press conference on Wednesday.

He said that the restrictions may only be in place for a few weeks and may also be slightly different based on where people are in Wales.

"You will record previously in the spring we had a stay local period and that was when we knew less about the virus," he said.

"I think it was important in getting people ready for the potential for wider travel and people moving to different parts of Wales.

"We do know that if we are going to have an effective restart for parts of our tourism sector with self-contained accommodation then that probably means that a stay local period probably doesn't mean that those businesses can open."

He added that common sense would need to be applied saying: "We are thinking about what stay local would mean and the First Minister will confirm that.

"It about asking people to stay with it for a period of weeks and be sensible and recognise that if, like me you are fortunate enough to be like me and live in Penarth then actually a few miles from Penarth you can do lots of things.

"Whereas if I lived in the middle of Powys or the middle of Anglesey within a few miles I might not be able to do that. We do recognise that if we go to stay local it will be slightly different depending on where you live. That I think is what most of us, applying common sense, will recognise and that the guidance around that will recognise that too.

"A few weeks of that and then we think we will be in a position to go beyond that."
