Vaughan Gething criticises Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for coming to Cardiff in midst of pandemic

Wales' health minister Vaughan Gething has taken a swipe at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over their cross-UK tour to thank frontline workers today.

Speaking ahead of the Royal couple's arrival in Cardiff on Tuesday, he said that the visit must not be an "excuse" for people to break coronavirus rules.

Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething was asked if it is the right time for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to visit Wales.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I'd rather that no-one was having unnecessary visits and people always have divisive views about the monarchy, but their visit isn't an excuse for people to say that they are confused about what they are being asked to do."

Asked whether William and Kate should still go, he said: "I'm not particularly bothered or interested because I don't think that is going to be an excuse for people to say 'I should go and behave in a different way and I should act as if the harm that is being seen in front of us in every part of our healthcare system is not taking place'."

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon suggested the Duke and Duchess travelled to Edinburgh despite their office being made aware of restrictions for those wanting to cross the border.

But Royal sources said the visits were planned in consultation with the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments and stressed they were working, which permits travel across the border.

William and Kate have been touring the country thanking key and frontline workers and communities for their efforts during the pandemic.

They are going to be speaking to students about their mental health experiencing at university during their visit to Cardiff on Tuesday.
