Vatican dispenses with five-year rule to canonise Mother Teresa

The Pope has waived the mandatory wait of five years after death to begin the process of eventual sainthood for Mother Teresa, sparking hopes that the nun who dedicated her life to the destitute of Calcutta will soon be declared a saint, the Archbishop of Calcutta said yesterday.

Archbishop Henry D'Souza received a letter announcing the waiver from the Vatican in December .

'The demand was so great and insistent that the Holy Father thought to go ahead,' a Vatican spokesman said.

Now Archbishop D'Souza can begin the process of gathering testimony about the nun, the first step toward beatification and sainthood.

Beatification requires the confirmation of a miracle. After beatification, research on a second miracle needed for canonisation, can begin.

Already two miracles have been attributed to Mother Teresa.

The first involved a French woman who had broken several ribs in a car accident. Her injuries miraculously healed when she wore a Mother Teresa medallion.

The second miracle reported was that of a Palestinian girl with cancer who was cured after Mother Teresa appeared in her dreams, saying: 'Child, you are cured.'
