VAT cut announced for UK summer attractions as Reeves unveils cost-of-living package

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a temporary VAT cut on summer attractions as part of a new package aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures for families across the United Kingdom.

The government confirmed VAT on selected summer attractions will be reduced from 20 per cent to 5 per cent during the summer months under what ministers are calling the “Great British Summer Savings” initiative.

The measure, which had not been publicly briefed in advance, was unveiled alongside a series of previously announced policies, including an extension of the fuel duty freeze, free bus travel for children in England during August, and steps to protect jet fuel supplies ahead of the holiday season.

According to the BBC, the temporary VAT reduction is expected to apply to some family attractions and leisure activities, with ministers hoping cheaper tickets and reduced costs for children’s meals will encourage spending during the summer holidays.

The government said the package is designed to help households facing ongoing financial pressures as ministers continue focusing on living costs and consumer spending.

However, Reeves did not announce any new broad support scheme for household energy bills ahead of winter.

Government officials said ministers were instead focusing on contingency planning for colder months and argued that large-scale universal support packages similar to those introduced during the previous Conservative government would be too expensive to repeat.

Officials indicated that any future energy support is likely to be targeted rather than universal, although no details have yet been confirmed regarding eligibility or potential payments.

The Treasury has defended the approach amid continuing concerns over public finances and inflation pressures.
