Vast majority of pubs open adhering to Covid-19 guidelines as 138 breaches recorded by Gardai

Gardai have said the vast majority of food-serving pubs are sticking to public health guidelines.

New figures revealed that just 13 breaches of the rules were detected last week.

It brings to 138 the total breaches of Covid-19 licensing laws since Operation Navigation began in July.

There have been thousands of checks carried out and a number of files have been sent to the DPP in relation to bars where punters were found drinking without consuming food.

Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey said, “The continued high level of compliance among licensed premises is very welcome.

“Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we individually and collectively follow the public health advice and adhere to the public health regulations to flatten this new curve in the virus.”

Gardai also conducted 164 checkpoints to enforce the lockdown in counties Kildare, Offaly and Laois over last weekend and a further 190 in surrounding counties.

Meanwhile publicans have blasted Government leaks suggesting there would be no “open ended” support for shuttered bars in response to calls for ongoing payments to support the sector while it remains closed.

Donall O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the LVA said: “We’re in an environment where the Taoiseach has said that he can’t guarantee pubs will open before Christmas. The sector is being crippled with uncertainty.

“If the Government is keeping pubs closed on an open-ended basis then any supports must move with that timeline.”

THE LVA and VFI have called for a weekly payment to closed pub owners of between €270 and €1,650 similar to supports available to businesses that have been allowed reopen.

“Pubs are now closing on a weekly basis, with jobs being lost for good,” Mr O’Keeffe added.

“If the Government wants to announce a package for the pubs still closed, anything short of real support will be regarded as another considerable blow to the 3,500 pubs that are still closed, their 25,000 employees and all the families involved.

“They have been singled out by Government and cast aside when it comes to the reopening of the economy and society.”
