Vast amount of alcohol seized from underage drinkers on GCSE results night

A "large amount" of alcohol was seized from underage drinkers out celebrating on GCSE results night.

According to South Wales Police , the booze was confiscated from underage drinkers in a special operation run in the Gower and Mumbles on Thursday night.

Dyfed-Powys Police also said it seized three litres of vodka, one litre of cherry sours, one litre of cider, two bottles of wine, 26 bottles of beer and 24 individual shots in Haverfordwest.

South Wales Police's special operation team was made up of specials, teachers from Olchfa School and Bishopston Comprehensive School, and Gower MP Tonia Antonazzi.

A ‘safe space’ was also set up by South Wales Police volunteers for anyone who was vulnerable or unwell.

Sergeant Chris Dix, from South Wales Police, said: “I would like to thank the local schools and MP for their support.

"We would like to remind parents to know where their young people are and that drinking underage can not only lead to anti-social behaviour but also to a young person becoming vulnerable.”

Dyfed-Powys Police sent a team of 11 out in Haverfordwest, which included seven officers and four PCSOs who were joined by a team of street pastors.

Sergeant Haydon Mathias of Dyfed-Powys Police oversaw the operation.

He said: “It’s a big day for teenagers, and we understand they want to celebrate." But he added that police were there to make sure they did that safely, and without disrupting others.”

The long-term effects of alcohol consumption

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said they were expecting an increase in underage drinking and anti-social behaviour over the weekend because of GCSE result celebrations.

She said there would be neighbourhood teams, special officers and community officers on patrol to combat it.
