Vasilis Barkas reveals his mentality shift as Celtic keeper talks up Greece change of plan

Prepared Vasilis Barkas expects to be a lot busier because John van’t Schip has geared Greece up for goals.

The Greeks continue their Nations League campaign in Moldova this evening.

The Celtic keeper, a £5m summer signing for Neil Lennon, is hoping to help his Dutch coach to a win, as they look to catch Group C 3 table-toppers Slovenia.

Barkas said: “There has been a belief that Greece are mainly a defensive side but we are trying to gradually change that from our games. “It is something we can do.

“I think the fans are also thinking about us differently, not as a team who are defensive but a team who can play.”

The former AEK Athens star thinks there has been a real change in mentality under van’t Schip, who helped the Netherlands to win the 1988 European Championships.  He has taken the pressures off his players and Barkas, speaking on Sky Sports’ Nations League preview, added: “The first thing he asks is to give his all for the national team.

“He is absolutely right about that. He asks us to play football and not fear anything.

"He has given us the freedom to play.”
