Vasilis Barkas puts Celtic struggles to one side as he nearly scoops coveted Greek goalkeeping award

Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas has been named the second best goalkeeper of the year in a poll in his native Greece.

The shot-stopper joined the Premiership champions from AEK Athens in the summer but has struggled in Scotland.

With one of the lowest save percentages in the division and a number of high-profile errors, manager Neil Lennon has turned to Scott Bain in recent weeks.

But it seems Barkas remains highly rated in his homeland as he came second in a prestigious Player of the Year vote.

Barkas finished runners-up in the Best Goalkeeper category to Portuguese international keeper Jose Sa, who plays for Greek champions Olympiacos.

Sa said: "This is a magnificent honour for me especially since I won it ahead of some great goalkeepers too.

"It's the result of a lot of hard work that has gone into my game."

Barkas last started a game for Celtic on January 20 in a 2-2 draw in a blizzard at Livingston.
