Vasilis Barkas in Celtic Champions League fitness sweat after Bristol City warm-up injury

Celtic are facing a Champions League sweat over Vasilis Barkas.

The Greek goalkeeper was due to start tonight’s friendly against Bristol City.

But he was withdrawn during the warm-up and replaced in the starting XI by Scott Bain.

The extent of Barkas’ injury has not yet been confirmed, but he has been pictured watching on from the sidelines at the Robins’ High Performance Training Centre with his fingers heavily strapped.

That suggests he is now an injury doubt for next week’s crunch Champions League qualifier against Fc Midtjylland.

Ange Postecoglou faces his first massive test as Celtic boss when the Danes travel to Celtic Park next Tuesday for the first leg of the second round qualifying tie.

With Rangers already a round ahead of Celtic in the quest to reach the lucrative group stages, the pressure is on not to miss out on the riches guaranteed elite level European football until Christmas would bring.

Should Barkas not make it then Bain would almost certainly take his place between the sticks.

Barkas started Celtic’s first friendly of pre-season against Sheffield Wednesday and last Saturday’s win over Charlton Athletic, which suggests he will be Postecolgoou’s first choice this season.

His hasn’t been the only injury suffered in England’s southwest this evening. Mikey Johnston was forced off after less than half-an-hour, going off with what looked like a tight hamstring.

Karamoko Dembele was also taken off before half-time with an injury.
