Vasilios Barkas transfer latest as Celtic face AEK Athens stalemate

Celtic are locked in stalemate with AEK Athens in the move to sign £6.5 million-rated goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.

The Greek international is on the Parkhead target list as they hunt a new No.1 for the upcoming campaign.

Celtic made a first move this week with sources in Greece claiming an opening offer of £3.5 million rising by another £1 million in add-ons had been rejected by AEK.

Reports in Athens last night stated Parkhead chiefs had upped that initial offer for the 26-year-old with the personal terms also agreeable to the Dutch-born keeper.

However, Record Sport understands there's been no major alterations in the situation over the past 48 hours and that no agreement has been reached at this stage between the clubs.

And, with AEK setting an initial asking price of £6.5 million as they look to drum up more interest and start an auction for Barkas, Celtic are continuing to explore other options having failed in their opening attempts to get Fraser Forster from Southampton on a loan-to-buy deal.

Meanwhile, Celtic have confirmed they will face Ross County on Sunday and Hibs 24 hours later in Celtic Park friendlies which season ticket holders will be able to watch on Celtic TV.
