Vaseline hailed as little-known 'cure' by hay fever sufferers - this is how to use it

For the majority of the UK's population, the long, sunny days of recent weeks have been a welcome presence after a rather wet start to the summer.

However as the mercury rises, pollen counts have also soared - leaving many with the familiar symptoms of streaming eyes and endless sneezing associated with hay fever.

Around 13 million people in the UK are thought to be affected by the common allergy, the majority of whom are likely familiar with the yearly ritual of trying to get their hands on whatever the most effective remedy seems to be.

But now it seems that hay fever sufferers have discovered a new cure - and you've probably got some tucked away in your bathroom cupboard, Cornwall Live reports.

Sneezy sufferers have taken to Twitter to declare Vaseline as this year's ultimate weapon against hay fever.

Some have even claimed it's far more effective than antihistamines, which can leave you feeling drowsy and tired.

Why you could face a driving ban for taking hay fever medication

How it works

All you need to do is apply a layer of Vaseline  around the insides of your nostrils as high as possible.

Yes, it might look - and even feel - a little weird, but if it stops the runny nose and constant sneezing, we'll give it a try.

The fans

Twitter users have been vocal in their delight at this simple remedy.

The verdict

Let's face it, as far as remedies go, it's a lot less painful than rubbing stinging nettles on yourself.

Although gin as a hay fever cure is still our favourite of all!
