Various: Peru Bravo review – 1960s Peruvian psych and funk unearthed

The Andes and Amazon have become a happy hunting ground for pop archaeologists in recent years. Aside from the compulsive rhythms of cumbia, the twang of chicha’s surf guitars has been resurrected. This second volume from DJ-turned-restaurateur Martin Morales extends the story to the funk and psych outfits that flourished in Lima in the late 1960s, before the military junta squashed them. The squalls of “heavy” guitar and soul covers such as the Meters’ Cissy Strut are inspired by the US scene but the Latin rock of locals such as Laghonia and Traffic Sound suggests a Peruvian Santana could have emerged and conquered.
