Variety has apologised after presenting comments made by Kristen Stewart about gender equality as about diversity, leading the actress to be sharply criticised.
The Certain Women star spoke to the magazine about the growing debate around gender equality and the gender pay gap in Hollywood, where Stewart told people to “go do something” instead of just moaning about the problems, describing the discussion as “boring”.
“Instead of sitting around and complaining about that, do something,” Stewart said. “Go write something, go do something.
“And that’s easy to say. Like, f**k, it’s hard to get movies made. It’s a huge luxury. Who gets to just make movies? But that subject is just so prevalently everywhere right now, and it’s boring.”
The video was presented under a headline suggesting she was discussing diversity, another major debate in Hollywood after only white actors were nominated for Oscars for a second year running. The first edit of the video did not include the question from the interviewer and Stewart was criticised by people wrongly believing she was branding the discussion about diversity boring.
A longer edit of the video which includes the question posed by the interviewer has now replaced the shorter version on Variety’s site.
Variety said in a correction: “Comments made in a videotaped interview Monday with actress Kristen Stewart about gender equality in Hollywood at the Sundance Film Festival were erroneously labeled on Variety.com in a way that suggested she was addressing issues pertaining to diversity. Variety regrets the error and apologises for any confusion.”
