Varane, Pogba, Cavani - Manchester United injury latest and return dates vs Newcastle

Manchester United have emerged from their Covid-19 outbreak and will return to Premier League action against relegation-threatened Newcastle on Monday night (8pm).

Having earned victories over Crystal Palace and Norwich City - either side of watching a much-changed side draw with Champions League opponents Young Boys - interim manager Ralf Rangnick is set to take charge for his fourth game at St James' Park.

Back in training as pandemic-related problems continue to halt the sporting calendar, this unscheduled break has allowed United's injured players extra time to recover.

They have been without Raphael Varane, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani for several weeks.

As attentions turn to Newcastle and Burnley later in the festive programme, two of those players have returned to training at Carrington - but how likely are they to feature competitively?

Here is the current state of play on the United treatment table;

Edinson Cavani

Injury: Tendon

Possible return date: December 27 vs Newcastle

What Rangnick has said: "It would be great to have both those players [Cavani and Varane] available as soon as possible, but obviously for the rest of the season."

Paul Pogba

Injury: Thigh

Return date: January 2022

What Rangnick has said: "He still isn't fully fit and, from what I've heard, it will take another couple of weeks until he's fit for training again. He has been out [injured] for some time, so it will take another couple of weeks to get him match fit."

Raphael Varane

Injury: Hamstring

Possible return date: December 27 vs Newcastle

What Rangnick has said: "We would be happy to have them on board as soon as possible but, especially with Rapha and his injury record in the past, we need to make sure that we have him until the end of the season, so it's about sustainability and not only getting him fit as soon as possible."
