Neil Swarbrick, the retired top-flight referee now in charge of implementing VAR in the Premier League, admits that replays could be shown to fans inside stadiums in the future.
The Premier League is using VAR for the first time this season and, after just two rounds of fixtures, it is already causing debate.
Manchester City have seen a goal chalked off in each of their two matches thus far, while Wolves had to wait 98 seconds before having what could have been a winning goal against Leicester disallowed in their goalless draw on the opening day of the campaign.
For the fans inside football stadiums, the journey to euphoria has rarely ended with such a bump.
The Premier League is, however, the first football competition to inform supporters via the big screens that a review is taking place.
But is that enough? In Rugby Union, VAR replays are shown to the crowd when a try is being considered.
And Swarbrick says that, in the future, this could be introduced to football too.
“We are the first competition to introduce the reviews being shown so let’s take things one step at a time,” he told the BBC.
“That might evolve. We are showing the reviews so maybe we might get there going forward on that.”
