VAR official's Premier League absence explained after Giovani Lo Celso error against Chelsea

VAR was again one of the main talking points of the weekend's Premier League action as a number of controversial decisions were made by officials using the technology.

The first of these was the decision not to show Giovani Lo Celso a straight red card for a challenge on Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta in the Blues' 2-1 win over Spurs.

After a lengthy review at Stockley Park, VAR official David Coote recommended to referee Michael Oliver not to send the midfielder off.

After the incident the PGMOL clarified that it was "Not a clear and obvious error and there was nowhere else for Lo Celso to put his foot," they said.

But, the organisation later backtracked and admitted that the decision was a mistake, with Lo Celso not even being shown a yellow card for the challenge.

Later the official came under even more scrutiny when a handball in the box by Kevin De Bruyne in Manchester City's 1-0 win over Leicester went unpunished.

A similar incident in the second half, with the ball hitting Leicester midfielder Dennis Praet's hand, led to a different outcome, although Sergio Aguero's penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

However, the decisions led to fans and pundits complaining about the lack of consistency both across games and in a game itself.

Coote, the man behind the VAR decisions, was not included in the Premier League officials lists for the weekend's games, leading to thoughts that he had been temporarily dropped by the league after the mistakes.

However, the official has appeared on the list for the Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, where he will take the role of fourth official.

This could explain his absence from Premier League duty over the weekend and means that the official could be back officiating in the league in the following week.
