VAR lies in wait for Celtic and Rangers in the Europa League

VAR will be used in the Europa League after all, UEFA have revealed.

European football’s governing body have only introduced TV technology in its premier event, the Champions League.

But this season will see VAR brought into its second-tier competition – though only for the knockout stages.

So should either or both of Scotland’s two European representatives – Celtic and Rangers – progress then they will be at the centre of the technology that has divided opinion.

Neil Lennon’s side may have hoped VAR was already used in the Europa League after Vakoun Bayo was incorrectly sent off for a second yellow card when he was adjudged to have kicked Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy in the head as he challenged for a ball.

TV pictures clearly showed he had not.

The Video Assistant Referee has split opinion since it was first written into the Laws of the Game. Many feel it is eliminating human error while others feel its slows up the game yet still isn’t 100 per cent accurate. VAR is charged with correcting "clear and obvious errors" and "serious missed incidents".
