VAR in Carabao Cup explained amid controversy at Liverpool v Arsenal and Chelsea v Man United

Arsenal returned to Carabao Cup action tonight.

Unai Emery brought back Mesut Ozil into the team to make his first start for Arsenal in over a month.

Ozil featured along senior players Lucas Torreira and Rob Holding with Hector Bellerin captaining the side.

Liverpool opened the scoring then Shkodran Mustafi turned the ball into his own net after just six minutes.

Five minutes later and Unai Emery's side were level when Lucas Torreira turned the ball home from close range.

However replays suggested that the Spaniard was offside when he put the ball in the net, and had it been a Premier League game then referee Andre Marriner could have used VAR for assistance.

But the technology, which was used in last season's competition, isn't being used this time round after the EFL opted to get rid of the system on the grounds that it was only being used at Premier League venues.

It could be reintroduced for the Carabao Cup semi-finals but a decision is yet to be made.
