VAR decision gifts Mateusz Klich and Leeds United second chance to take lead against West Ham United

Mateusz Klich has VAR to thank for saving his blushes, after he was given the opportunity to re-take a missed penalty in just the second minute of the game.

Lukasz Fabianski brought down Patrick Bamford who was through on goal after Liam Cooper seized on a loose ball in the middle.

The Polish stopper was then ajudged to have been off his line as Klich stepped up and rolled his spot kick to the goalkeeper's left, which resulted in an easy save.

VAR intervened however, gifting Klich a second opportunity and the Pole made no mistake a second time, sending his penalty to the goalkeeper's left this time. His countrymate was left crestfallen in the West Ham United goal, begrudging the decision from referee Michael Oliver.

West Ham could be a tough nut to crack

It proved to be the first opportunity of the game with Bamford expertly sidestepping Fabianski before being taken down in the box. It mirrored his move immediately prior to scoring the opener at Stamford Bridge last weekend, which came in the third minute of the game.

Klich's first penalty was tame, and a real disappointment. However, VAR came to the rescue, with a screengrab of the moment the Leeds man took the penalty showing quite clearly Fabianski standing off his goal-line.

The rules stipulate if a goalkeeper saves a spot kick and has left his goal-line prior to the kick being taken, the penalty is to be staged again.

Klich will be grateful for this ruling, and made good of his second attempt, firmly planting it low into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.

It represented a start to the game in which the tempo was breathtaking. The minutes in which VAR spent checking the decision probably proved necessary respite while Leeds' opponents caught their breath.
