'VAR-chester City' - Tottenham fans fume at Raheem Sterling's tackle on Dele Alli

Tottenham Hotspur supporters took to social media to vent their anger after Raheem Sterling escaped a red card for a poor tackle on Dele Alli.

In the 12th minute of the Premier League clash, the ball broke loose on the edge of the Spurs penalty area, and Alli and Sterling both attempted to reach it first.

Sterling's challenge was late and caught the Tottenham midfielder on the ankle with his studs-up.

Referee Mike Dean showed a yellow card to the City winger, with a subsequent VAR check ruling that it was not a red card offence.

Sterling was quick to apologise to his England teammate, but that did not stop many Tottenham fans taking to social media to express their disgust at the decision, with the majority believing it to be a red card offence.

One wrote: 'Should be a red card, unreal,' while another posted: 'That was a red card all day long.'

Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho was also seen reacting in astonishment on the touchline, with his head in hands after the decision was shown on the big screen.
