Vanderbilt mulls using goalkeeper Sarah Fuller as its kicker

The Vanderbilt-Missouri SEC contest wouldn’t normally attract much attention this late in the season. However, the Commodores’ possible choice of a placekicker makes the game intriguing.

Faced with COVID-19 issues throughout its roster, 0-7 Vanderbilt is considering having Sarah Fuller kick against the Tigers. Fuller was the goalkeeper on the Vanderbilt team that won the SEC title last weekend,

“Right now, we’re just looking at all options,” coach Derek Mason said on ESPN 102.5 The Game. “For us, talking to Sarah, she’s a champ, and no pun intended. Just coming off an SEC Championship in soccer… She’s a complete competitor. She’s an option for us. Right now, that’s where we sit.”

Fuller would become the first female to kick in a Power 5 game if Mason calls upon her.

The school newspaper added to the intrigue.

The Hustler that Fuller was wearing full pads and a uniform but did not take any kicks. Instead, she went through walk-throughs with coaches and at least one specialist on the sidelines, multiple sources say.

Fuller appeared in nine games and made 28 saves for the Commodores, who finished 8-4 last season. She had three saves last weekend as Vanderbilt upset top-seeded Arkansas 3-1 to capture the SEC tournament title.
