Vandals target Lanarkshire town with graffiti sparking clean-up mission by community group

A community in Lanarkshire has rallied to clean up graffiti spray painted in their town.

Residents in Uddingston reported the vandalism to South Lanarkshire Council as well as Network Rail, however it was local volunteers who ended up cleaning the mess.

Members of Uddingston Pride decided to tackle the areas tagged themselves, including the wall underneath the rail bridge on Old Glasgow Road.

The local authority referred the group to Network Rail but they were unable to remove it as it was "not offensive" and therefore would not be treated as a priority.

The travel organisation wrote to Uddingston Pride and stated: "Network Rail will not remove graffiti unless it is obscene, racist or sectarian."

That sparked the community group taking matters into their own hands.

A number of solutions were offered to members including a local cleaning company getting involved to clean up the graffiti, as well as the suggestion of a local street artist covering it up.

Eventually volunteers from Uddingston Pride took to the streets to remove the vandalism as members of the community applauded their efforts.

Uddingston Pride posted on social media after the clean-up mission was complete: "The areas tackled today were the graffiti on the wall between Anne's Pantry and Uddingston Grammar School and some on the large green cabinet opposite W Livingstone Ltd car dealership.

"If there are other areas you'd like us to add to the list, please let us know and we'll do our best to get action taken.

"Please report all instances to the relevant council initially just in case they will take action.

"Thank you to everyone who offered assistance and support. We hope you'll support us in future to tackle this other form of litter and help us raise funds to cover the cost of cleaning products and equipment."

Commenting on the clean-up mission, one local said: "Thank you for doing this. We all really appreciate your effort and hard work."

Another added: "You are the most amazing people keeping Uddingston a beautiful place. Thank you."

A third commented: "Great job of cleaning up someone’s mess! Carry on."

"That must have been hard work. Well done", said one local appreciative of the clean-up job."

And one resident remarked: "Thank you to each and every one of you that gave up your time and energy to keep Uddingston looking lovely."

Uddingston Pride have urged locals who see similar issues or areas targeted by graffiti to get in touch to report the matter on their Facebook page.
