Vandals target election posters

Police are investigating more than 90 criminal cases associated with election campaigning, deputy national police chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul revealed yesterday.

Most deal with the vandalism of campaign posters, Pol Gen Srivara said.

More election-related cases are being processed in court, he added.

He spoke after chairing a meeting at the police force's centre for security and peacekeeping during the election.

Also discussed were security measures for electioneering in the southern border provinces, and security plans for the March 17 advance vote and March 24 election, he said.

Meanwhile, a group calling itself the People's Team for Constitution Protection petitioned the Election Commission (EC) yesterday asking it to submit a new request to the Constitutional Court to dissolve the Future Forward Party for violating Section 92 of the organic law on parties, which relates to offences that undermine the constitutional monarchy.

Boonthawon Panyaprasit, who is leading the movement, said party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit and secretary-general secretary-general Piyabutr Saengkanokkul had on various occasions since 2011 made remarks with the apparent intention of removing Section 112 of the Criminal Code, better known as the lese majeste law, and continuing with Khana Ratsadon's (People's Party) "mission".

Khana Ratsadon was a Siamese group of military and civil officers, and later a political party, that staged a bloodless coup against former King Prajadhipok and transformed the country from an absolute to constitutional monarchy on June 24, 1932.

Copies of media reports containing interviews the two men gave were submitted with the petition.

Meanwhile, the Administrative Court dismissed a petition by Thai Raksa Chart Party (TRC) member Ruangkrai Leekitwattana against the EC's resolution on Feb 12 asking the court dissolve the TRC for nominating Princess Ubolratana as its prime ministerial candidate.

A court decision on the party's fate is still pending.
