Vandals target Dwayne Peel's old rugby club after they'd spent £50,000 improving facilities

A Welsh rugby club has spoken out after seeing their training pitch and a surrounding area damaged by an act of vandalism.

Tumble RFC believe a quad bike or a scrambler bike was driven across the field at Parc y Mynydd Mawr.

Those responsible have been condemned on social media as “idiots”.

The club where former Wales scrum-half Dwayne Peel started out have spent £50,000 on their training pitch at the community park in which they play. They are trying to further improve facilities, so were understandably angered when discovering the anti-social behaviour.

A spokesperson for the west Wales club said: “It’s really upsetting.

“Going up there for a walk, I saw these tracks that appeared to have been left by a quad bike or a scrambler bike.

“In conjunction with several other bodies, we are trying to bring additional facilities to the park for the benefit of the community.

“All of us are trying hard.

“I can only speak for the rugby club and about our area.

“It’s just frustrating.

“The majority of the damage isn’t to the pitch, but there’s an area where they’ve gone around one of the floodlights and you can see the tyre marks on the field.

“We’ve spent over £50,000 on the drainage of the training pitch and we are looking for other money.

“The pitch will recover, but we want to put out a message that what’s happened is not acceptable and we don’t want it to happen again.

“If those responsible are local people, then that makes it even worse because they’re harming their own community. It’s anti-social behaviour and it has to stop.

“We’d be grateful if anyone who has any information can let us know by direct message on social media.”

Tumble put out a post on Twitter saying: “We are extremely disappointed as a club to see Parc y Mynydd Mawr has suffered from vandalism over the weekend.

“Someone has damaged several areas around the top rugby field with what appears to be a scrambler motorbike and our yet-to-be finished children’s play area has been broken into in what appears to be a separate incident.

“A playground fence panel has been broken away from one of the posts only days after being repaired. The portable toilet being used by contractors installing the playground has also been tipped over.

“With people working hard in the background to bring further investment and facilities to the park this is extremely disappointing, frustrating and upsetting.

“We will be reviewing the recently installed CCTV which covers areas of the park and will be forwarding any relevant footage to the authorities.

“If anyone has any information on who is responsible for these incidents please let us know by private message.

“As a community we need to send out a message that this type of behaviour by a minority is not acceptable.

“If people see similar incidents in the future please let the police know.”

A poster on Twitter responded: “One day they may have kids of their own, then they will make a fuss that their kids have got nowhere to play. Idiots.”
