Vandals smear "scum of the earth" over Motherwell war memorial

Police have appealed for witnesses after a war monument was trashed by vile vandals over the weekend.

The memorial, which is based in the Duchess Park in Motherwell, was this week covered in offensive red graffiti.

North Lanarkshire Council blasted whoever was behind the ‘disrespectful’ act.

They said: “We’re very sad to learn that the war memorial at Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell has been vandalised. This disrespectful act can’t be tolerated. Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101.”

Lanarkshire Police Division said: “Between Saturday and Monday, June 8 and 10, the war memorial and name plates were vandalised by graffiti at Duchess Park, Avon Street, Motherwell.

“If you have any information that could assist call 101 or Crimestoppers 0800555111 ref PS-20190610-1914.”

And many took to social media to express their anger too.

One said: “Disgusting, hope they catch who did this.”

Another added: “Shocking.”

One commented: “They are the lowest of the low.”
