Vandals slammed after West Lothian electricity substation catches fire

Vandals who are deliberately setting fires have been slammed after one blaze spread to an electricity substation.

Police have appealed for information after a fire was started in Lower Bathville on Sunday.

Officers said it appears the fire was started in rubbish and then spread to the nearby substation. Power had to be was isolated from the substation to make it safe, leaving some people without electricity.

Armadale councillor Stuart Borrowman said on his Facebook page that the culprits were putting people in danger.

He said: “Workers repairing power and other connections following yet more fires in Lower Bathville.

“A substation was damaged and local premises required generators for power supply.

“We need a community effort to address this or we may see someone badly hurt or jobs lost in the town.

“I’m in touch with both the police and the landowner hoping they can escalate their work to manage this.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the incident happened around 2.10pm on Sunday, May 30.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire safely and there were no injuries and the fire is being treated as deliberate.

Detective Constable Marc Lunn, of Livingston CID, said: “Thankfully nobody has been injured as a result of the incident but substantial damage has been caused.

“We are appealing to members of the public who may have noticed anyone acting suspicious in the area to come forward and speak to officers.

“I would ask if anyone has possible dashcam or CCTV footage that could assist with our investigation to contact police.

“Police can be contacted on 101 quoting incident number 2202 of Sunday, 30 May, 2021.”
