Vandals on rampage in Cumnock after smashing windows and setting fire to bins

Mindless vandals have left a town in despair after smashing 16 windows in three days.

Teenagers filmed themselves on their trashing spree in Cumnock as they set fire to shop bins and destroyed windows at the bus station, leaving shards of glass surrounding the shelter.

Community councillor Michael Mcpake, 62, said: “It was a very sad 36 hours for Cumnock.

“I stood at my window and watched a horde of teenagers running amok, kicking over bins and screaming at the top of their voices as they went on their way to the bus station.

“Friday was bad enough – they put in a couple of windows in the bus shelter – but Sunday was just unbelievable.

“They ran riot. They demolished 10 windows and set fire to about five big bins.

“It was frightening.

“The place was like a bomb site.

“They actually filmed themselves and they’re jumping and laughing.

“I pity the poor people who had to use the station in the morning. No shelter from the rain.

“I spoke to one shopkeeper who told me that his bin was set ablaze and that the company who supplies his service want £90 to replace his bin.

“He very reluctantly had to pay up but his question is why should he and others be billed for vandalism?”

Michael wants to hear from others with ideas on how to address the problem, including setting up a social media community page to chat about issues in the area.

He said: “Cumnock Community Council are dying to do something but they just don’t know how to address it.

“We need new ideas but those ideas to follow through to positive action.

“We want a nice town centre to bring folk into Cumnock.

“We can help stamp out vandalism if we unite and speak out.

“If anyone out there has a real good answer I’d love to hear it and I’ll take anything to the community council.”
