Vandals flood East Kilbride leisure centre forcing it to close

Vandals have forced the closure of the Dollan Aqua Centre, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage into the bargain.

Now cops are asking for information as they hunt the group responsible.

Members of the public turning up to use the centre on Saturday morning were turned away after late-night crooks smashed the reception and flooded the East Kilbride landmark.

Having managed to force entry to the leisure facility, those responsible somehow smashed a hole in the reinforced glass of the viewing window.

The glass – which holds back the water of the pool – was destroyed, allowing water to rip through the building.

It is understood the damage was inflicted in the early hours of Saturday morning after a break-in – vandals made their way into the building after smashing one of the windows.

No time limit has been put on the closure, but as employees waited outside the building for more information, they told the News it will definitely be closed this weekend while damage is assessed.

They also said that other areas of the building have been damaged, including the reception area.

A member of staff on the scene told the News: “Vandals have broke in and done a serious amount of damage, probably thousands of pounds worth, and for what? It’s mindless.

“We don’t know how long it will be closed for yet because we can’t even get in the building yet.

“We don’t even know how long the viewing window has been there. It could be hard to find a replacement, but we just don’t know.”

A police cordon remained in place at the Dollan on Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to call Polcie Scotland on 101. Information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
