Vandals destroy dugouts at Gateshead ground a day after they had been rebuilt

Vandals destroyed dugouts at a community football stadium in Gateshead - just one day after they had been rebuilt from previous damage.

The Blue Star football ground - which is used by Wrekenton Blue Star and Whickham FC over-40s - on Black Lane, Wrekenton was targeted.

Contractors spent three days replacing previously vandalised metal-framed shelters with concrete block dugouts.

The work was completed on July 19, but by the following morning the groundsman discovered the vandals had struck once again.

Concrete blocks were left scattered across the turf, and Whickham over-40s committee member Ian Collins has slammed the actions of the vandals.

He said: “It's an historic problem. We've had a lot of issues with vandals burning the dugouts and trying to break into the changing rooms.

“By the Saturday morning, the vandals had come in and kicked in the blocks. It's mindless, I don't understand what you would get out of it to be honest."

Thugs previously burned and smashed up the perspex equipment which had been installed at a cost of £2,500.

Mr Collins, 44, of Whickham, estimates the latest damage would have set the clubs back a further £1,000.

But thanks to the generosity of local businesses and the community, the dugouts will once again be replaced.

Buildbase, a building supplies business, have donated materials to allow the club to rebuild a more "robust" dugout.

And Tyneside Building Material Ltd also chipped in by offering free labour to get the dugouts back up to scratch.

Mr Collins said: “It's good to see people come together and try and offer their services. It's just frustrating when youngsters come in and think it's alright to destroy it for no reason.

“We just want to raise awareness for people to keep their eyes out for these people."

Repairs to the brickwork have been completed, and the clubs hope the dugouts can be fully repaired over the weekend.

Mr Collins finished: “If it's left half-built, I've no doubt the vandals will be back.”

Northumbria Police confirmed the force is investigating the damage caused to the dugouts.
