Vandals damage Shane MacGowan's name in Barrowland Park artwork

A work of art in an iconic Glasgow park has been vandalised - with the damage specifically targeted at The Popes.

Jim Lambie's artwork in The Barrowland Park shows the names of the many famous acts who have appeared at the nearby Barrowlands Ballroom.

Vandals appear to have taken a hammer to the pathway and removed the entry for Shane MacGowan and The Popes, and another band called The Black Grapes.

Local resident Mark Irvine told Glasgow Live : "Some mindless moron has taken a hammer to the pathway in Barrowland Park displaying the names of all the bands to have played in the nearby Barrowland Ballroom.

"For whatever reason this act of wanton vandalism focused on the pathway entries for Shane MacGowan and the Popes, and another act called Black Grape which I don't know.

"Sleeping with the Sirens, Skunk Anansie, Supergrass, Katy Perry and Judas Priest all survived unscathed - although they could do with a clean up."

Mark, who lives on London Road, said he was disappointed in the act of vandalism.

"In any event it's depressing to see that fellow Glaswegians can behave in such an ugly, anti-social way - spoiling and trashing a local neighbourhood which lots of people have worked hard to improve in recent years."

The Barrowland Park, a temporary park created ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, is partly owned by Glasgow City Council.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council confirmed that council officers will be investigating the vandalism before attempting to repair the pathway.

They also added Police Scotland will be made aware.
