Vandals damage play equipment in popular Dumfries park

Police are searching for vandals who targeted parts of Dock Park in Dumfries over two nights.

Three youths were spotted damaging the soft ball and trampoline attractions between 11pm and 11.45pm on Monday and Tuesday.

They burned the side netting of the play centre causing scorch marks to the bouncy castle as well as throwing items and rubbish around the area.

CCTV footage is being reviewed in the hope of catching those responsible for the damage that could cost hundreds of pounds to repair.

PC Hayley McKerlie said: “It is very disappointing to see damage caused to such a well used facility in Dumfries.

“We have reviewed the CCTV in the Dock Park and seen three young people in the area around that time.

“We are keen to trace them and hope that someone may have seen them either at the Dock Park or nearby.

“I would urge anyone who may help us to identify those responsible to call us on 101.”

Council leader Elaine Murray, who represents the Nith ward which includes Dock Park, said: “It’s disappointing that we’re having so many of these vandalism problems.

“We had the inclusive play park and the Dumfries and Galloway Wheelchair Track Athletic Club container which was set on fire recently which is unfortunate.

“Dock Park has had a lot of money invested in it and for young people to behave like this is very selfish.

“They aren’t thinking about the time and money that has been invested in the park by people to make it what it is.

“It’s disappointing that young people are intent on making trouble.

“Young children enjoy using this area and it’s a shame that this has been done at their expense.”

On Thursday night louts also damaged a storage shed at the Jaggy Thistle Bistro at the Robert Burns Centre on Mill Road.

A Facebook post from the Bistro said: “There is nothing of value in here just tables, chairs and umbrellas for us to have a nice outdoor seating area to enjoy the views while eating.

“It’s soul destroying because we work so hard to provide a good service for everyone.

“However, we do have CCTV along the street and police have been called so we can find out who is responsible but any other information would be grateful if anyone has saw or heard anything.”
