Vandals damage memorial bench for Coatbridge man killed outside Spanish nightclub

A bench erected in memory of a Lanarkshire man killed while on a stag do in Spain has been vandalised.

The memorial was placed at the spot where Craig Mallon was attacked, close to Rockefellers nightclub club in Lloret de Mar, on May 19, 2012.

The 26-year-old from Coatbridge was on Costa Brava with eight friends for his stepbrother Bryan’s stag do when he was killed by a single punch in the early hours.

Despite eyewitness accounts and authorities discovering the group of key witnesses had left their hotel early, the case was not solved.

Now a team, led by retired Strathclyde Police detective David Swindle, discovered a plaque on the bench erected in Craig's memory had been destroyed on the 10-year anniversary of the tragedy.

It had Craig’s dates of birth and death inscribed on it and a message in Spanish which read: “In memory of Craig Mallon, the town of Lloret de Mar.”
