Vandals damage historic plane in Colwick school playground

Vandals have damaged an historic and well-known aircraft that sits pride of place in a school playground.

St John the Baptist Primary School in Vale Road, Colwick bought the plane in 2010 to turn into an interactive learning room for their pupils.

In 2010, the Nottingham Post reported the school had been granted permission to use the old commercial plane as a wildlife classroom and changing rooms.

The project which was the brainchild of former head teacher and plane enthusiast Chris Belton, and the plane was bought from an Air Museum in Barrow in Furness.

But vandals recently broke into the school playground and sprayed black graffiti across the side of the aircraft.

Neighbourhood Inspector Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We are investigating an act of criminal damage at St John the Baptist Primary School in Vale Road, Colwick, after graffiti was daubed on the side of the aircraft parked in the playground.

"We believe this incident took place between 4.30pm and 5.30pm on Thursday, July 30 and would like help from any members of the public who saw anything suspicious in the area around this time.

"Local officers will also be carrying out house to house and CCTV enquiries in the area."

"This aeroplane means a great deal to the children and staff at the school and I am determined to catch those responsible for this wanton act of vandalism."

Nottinghamshire Live contacted the school but no one was available for comment.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 quoting incident number 145 of 31 July.
