Vandals cause tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage after smashing stadium windows

Mindless vandals have caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage after smashing windows at the DW Stadium in Wigan .

Police have launched an investigation after a pair of men targeted the ground, home to the town's two main sports clubs, and a Costa Coffee at the nearby Robin Park retail hub during two wrecking sprees.

Officers believe the incidents happened on December 27 and January 1. The two locations were targeted on both occasions.

CCTV footage examined by police shows two men approaching each building before throwing several stones at the windows.

More than £25,000 worth of damage is thought to have been caused between the two locations, which are about 100 metres apart.

Pictures have since been shared on social media highlighting the damage to windows at the stadium, which is home to both Wigan Athletic Football Club and Wigan Warriors Rugby League Football Club.

The last match held at the stadium was Wigan Athletic's Sky Bet Championship fixture with Derby County on Boxing Day, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Latics are due to host Bristol City at the ground on Saturday, January 11.

Supporters of the clubs have responded by expressing their disgust at the men's actions.

Nathan Sinclair tweeted: "Can't believe that rather than support our team @LaticsOfficial some kids have decided to smash our stadium up tonight."

Police have described the men responsible as being in their late teens or early twenties, white, of skinny build, and about 5ft 7ins. One was seen on a mountain bike around the time.

Wigan Athletic declined to comment on the incident.

A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there was an incident at our Costa Coffee store at Robin Park Retail Park in Wigan. The store is open as usual and is operating normal trading hours.”
