More than 50 trees damaged, bins ripped from concrete and planters destroyed by vandals in Cardiff's Bute Park

Vandals have targeted Cardiff's much-loved Bute Park park causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Cardiff council said that they received a report of "significant criminal damage" in Bute Park in the city centre on Friday, September 10, morning.

More than 50 trees have been destroyed between Blackweir Bridge and Pettigrew Tearooms, while plants, planters and manhole covers have all been broken and bins ripped from the concrete.

Council officers are still assessing the park to see the full extent of the damage, while the incident has also been reported to South Wales Police.

It comes just a few months after vandals destroyed rugby posts on nearby Pontcanna Fields for the second time in a matter of weeks.

Meanwhile, burnt out motorcycles have also forced the closure of Blackweir Bridge on two occasions this summer.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said he "fully condemned" the vandalism, adding that it was "not acceptable".

He said: "We've received a report this morning of significant criminal damage in our much loved Bute Park.

"Thousands of pounds worth of damage has been done all the way from Blackweir Bridge to Pettigrew Tearooms. Over 50 trees have been destroyed, bins have been ripped from the concrete, plants and planters have been wrecked, manhole covers have been broken - our officers are still assessing the park to see the full extent of the damage.

"I fully condemn this behaviour. It is not acceptable. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to deliberately destroy an area that is there for everyone to enjoy.

"This is a crime and has been reported to the police. I urge anyone with any information to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to help deal with this senseless act of vandalism."
