Vandals attack site of £100k outdoor gym raising fears project may be delayed

A long-awaited £100k overhaul of facilities at McGavin Park in Kilwinning could be delayed after vandals struck at the weekend.

That's the warning from Kilwinning Community events after perimeter fencing was torn down and damaged at the site.

Workers with landscape experts and play park construction firm Azure Orange Ltd discovered the mess when they arrived at the park this morning.

Work on the project, which will include an outdoor gym, play equipment and zip slide only began earlier this month after it was delayed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Now Kilwinning Community Events, who are overseeing the project, say it could be delayed yet again while they draw up a plan to deter further attacks.

A statement on the group's Facebook page said: "This vandalism of the fence there for public safety could well delay things and make us review how we proceed.

"We will now have to find resources for emergency CCTV and long term CCTV. Its pretty disappointing."

The ambitious project on the site of the park’s old tennis court has been three years in the making.

The gym equipment will be linked to an app giving fitness tips and workouts. Picnic benches and seating will be installed alongside additional play equipment and a zip slide.

Extra footpaths were installed last October.

The investment has only been possible through a multitude of grant funders including NAC CIF funding, Kilwinning Charitable Trust, Landtrust and the advice of North Ayrshire Council

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
