Vandalism 'will not be tolerated' after protected trees destroyed in woods

A councillor has called for wildlife to be "protected and respected" after trees were destroyed by vandals.

The trees, in Field Farm, Stapleford, were destroyed earlier this week and were reported to police on May 11.

Separate incidents of trees being destroyed at Sutton Lawn, in Ashfield, have also caused concern after dog walkers found parts of branches scattered on the field.

And commenting on the Stapleford incident, independent Councillor Richard MacRae, said incidents like this "will not be tolerated".

He told Nottinghamshire Live that the incident has been reported to both the police and Broxtowe Borough Council, with the area now "under observation".

"Unfortunately criminal damage has taken place on Field Farm and trees that are protected by a tree preservation order have been destroyed," he said.

"The police and the council, as well as Westerman Homes, are now keeping an eye on the area.

"Trespassing and criminal damage will not be tolerated and now the location is under observation.

"Hopefully the offenders now keep away as not only have they destroyed trees they are also trespassing on private property.

"We are very lucky to have such nice woodland areas locally, some private and some belonging to the council.

"They all need to be protected and respected."

Anybody who sees any activity in the Stapleford area has been encouraged to contact Nottinghamshire Police quoting incident 354 of May 11, 2021.

Commenting on the Sutton Lawn incident, which occurred on May 14, an Ashfield District Council spokesperson also hit out at tree vandalism.

The council said: "We are sad to report that one of the trees at Sutton Lawn has been vandalised.

"If anyone witnessed the tree being vandalised we ask that you please contact the council so we can take further action.

"Our parks and green spaces are there to be enjoyed by all."
