Vandals break into 44 Telstra exchanges, causing potential impact on services

Telstra services have potentially been impacted after a series of break-ins at Telstra exchange buildings used to house broadband, telephone and NBN wires.

Telstra has confirmed 44 exchanges in Sydney were vandalised, leading the closure of some sites after exposed live wires caused safety concerns.

A Telstra spokesman declined to confirm which sites were targeted, however a list of affected suburbs seen by the ABC includes Waverley in Sydney's east, Como in the south, Berowra on the upper north shore, and Silverwater in the west.

The spokesman said security had been ramped up after some of the buildings' cables were damaged.

"All exchange sites are currently operational," he said.

"However, some of these sites will have access restricted or be temporarily closed to all Telstra staff, contractors and customers until inspections have been completed and any safety issues are resolved."

He said the closure of sites may impact future services.

The telecommunications giant said it was working closely with NSW Police to capture the offenders, but provided limited details due to the nature of the ongoing investigation.

"Security of our exchanges remains a priority and we are implement additional security measures across our facilities as a result," the spokesman said.

NSW Police said they were investigating the break-ins.
