Vandalism of facilities at a multi-use games area in Drumquin has condemned by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
The MUGA in the Co Tyrone village saw a playing surface set alight, while a fence around the area was damaged.
Significant rubbish was flytipped around the area as well, according to the council.
The facilities will now have to be closed in order to assess the damage and conduct repairs.
Council chair Errol Thompson said the closure of the games area would be a real loss to the local community.
“Access to parks and outdoor spaces is vitally important for our health and wellbeing. It is appalling that anyone would deliberately damage this important community resource,” Cllr Thompson added.
“Unfortunately, given the scale of the damage to the MUGA, the Council has been left with no other option but to close the MUGA while the damage is assessed and repairs undertaken.
“This is a real loss for the local community. I would appeal to those involved in these destructive acts to stop.
“I would like to thank the Council’s Parks, Estates and Property team for clearing the area of flytipped rubbish and debris so quickly.
“This wanton destruction all comes at a cost, not only to the local community but to every ratepayer across the district with Council staff and resources diverted from elsewhere to deal with the clean-up and repair works.
"Any wilful damage to Council property is reported to the PSNI and the Council actively pursues prosecution. Should anyone have any information in relation to vandalism at the Drumquin MUGA they should report it to the PSNI.”
