Vandalised memorial tribute to tragic Bestwood teen had to be removed

A Nottinghamshire playground has had its sign replaced after it was vandalised. Andy's Adventure Playground in Bestwood was set up by Sue Maycock in honour of her son Andrew, who died aged 16 in 2000.

Andrew was about to join the army when he was tragically hit by a car in Stevenholme Crescent, Bestwood Park. Sue raised money for the playground which opened in 2002, and it underwent a recent revamp in 2019.

There is a sign at the playground which says Andy's Adventure, helping to keep his memory alive to those who visit the park. Sadly earlier this month, the sign was vandalised and had to be removed.

A spokesperson for Gedling Borough Council said: "The sign and mounting post were vandalised a month or so ago and so the sign was taken away and replaced as quickly as possible. Andy’s family and the local Friends of Group were made aware and the sign has been replaced and relocated slightly."

It has since been replaced and relocated slightly to a different part of the playground, but many residents feared it had been stolen. Office worker, Janet Dire, 51, said “It is very disappointing that something created as a tribute to somebody can be taken away.”

Shaun Shergill, 36, lives in Bestwood also feared the sign had been stolen, he said: “It is really sad news, the plaque deserves to be put back where it belongs.” One local resident who didn’t want to be named said: “It's nice to see someone’s took the time to make a memorial but others are ruining the hard work, it is disheartening.”

Company director, Gavin Miller, 55, said: “This act of vandalism is disappointing, you wonder how people do such things. It is a beautiful area so is fitting for a memorial”
