Vandalised Hampden mural in honour of famous Scotland football victory is restored

A mural in the south side of Glasgow which commemorates a famous Scottish football victory has been restored.

The wall art, based at the Hampden Bowling Club near Crosshill railway station, was vandalised in February of this year.

The 1st Hampden mural was painted in 2019  in tribute to the Scotland's national team's 5-1 victory over the Auld Enemy in 1882 and features legend Charles Campbell and the world’s first black international footballer, Andrew Watson.

Through its history, Glasgow’s south side has played host to three different Hampden Parks, with the first at the bowling club, the second in Cathkin Park and the third our current national stadium.

Those behind the project were left heartbroken earlier this year when the mural was defaced.

Chris Bryant, Managing Director of ES Group involved the project, explained: “The passion and dedication in restoring this mural are infectious, and the site’s history is unbelievable. The mural is only part of this fantastic journey for Hampden Bowling Club, and it’s great to see Tennents Caledonian Brewers playing a part in this journey and numerous other sponsors.”

Ashley Rawson, who helped restore the mural, commented: “The work mainly involved re-painting figures, as well as the spectacular scoreline. The most inspiring thing was hearing passers by talking about the mural enthusiastically and shouting their support.

"One lady even cheered: which was lovely! At times the support was overwhelming, and my hope is that everyone’s passion and support continues with a long and fruitful life for the restored 1st Hampden Mural."
