Vandal used power saw to damage wheels of car parked outside neighbour's house

A Stirling man deliberately damaged a car parked outside a neighbour’s house with a powersaw early in the morning.

James Dormer had admitted a charge of wilfully destroying or damaging property belonging to another at Muirend Road in the city on June 20 this year.

The fiscal depute told Stirling Sheriff Court last Wednesday that neighbours of the 33-year-old accused had seen him leave his property and approach their car at 5am.

He then took a power tool to all four tyres and wheels of the vehicle.

Police were contacted and when officers examined the car they could see that chunks or rubber had been taken out of the tyres.

Chunks of metal had also been taken out of the alloy wheels which were also scraped.

The fiscal depute said that the complainer had advised that the cost of the damage was £805.70 which was not covered by insurance.

It was understood that the brand new car had been hired by the complainer.

Referring to a criminal justice social work report prepared by the court, Sheriff Niven Smith noted that mention had been made of some “background” to the incident.

Dormer’s lawyer Virgil Crawford told Sheriff Smith that Dormer, who had been under the influence of alcohol at the time, accepted it was an act of stupidity.

Sentencing Dormer, Sheriff Smith described the offence as an isolated incident.

He noted that the accused had a good job and had some previous convictions.

Sheriff Smith told Dormer that the fine would have been £1000 if not for his guilty plea. That sum was reduced by a third to £666.67.

He also imposed a compensation order of £805.70 and surcharge of £40.

The total sum of £1512.37 was payable within six months.
